SUEZ SUPPORTS THAILAND IN RECYCLING PLASTIC WASTE
2019-06-05 16:27       来源:SUEZ       作者:       分享:

SUEZ will build a plastic recycling plant in Thailand to turn waste plastics into circular polymers. The Group’s first-ever plastic recycling project in Asia, the circular polymer plant will be a model for the rest of Southeast Asia. It will also adhere to strict environmental standards and contribute to Thailand’s ambitious 2030 target to achieve 100% plastic recycling. This will help ease the global plastic waste crisis.

The plant, located in the Bang Phli District, near Bangkok, will convert 30,000 tons/year of locally collected low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) plastic film waste, that would have otherwise gone to waste or ended up in the environment, into high-quality post-consumer recycled plastic (PCR). This PCR will be used to produce products for a circular economy.

The plant will meet the highest local environmental compliance standards. It will be equipped with an efficient and advanced water treatment system that minimizes water usage and ensures that the surrounding environment is not affected. Part of the energy used by the plant is powered by rooftop solar panels to further reduce the environmental footprint. Construction works for a building area of 14,000 sqm are expected to be completed by the middle of 2020. The plant will employ 80 staff.

“In Thailand, two million tons of plastic waste are produced per year and only a quarter is recycled. As a leader in plastic recycling in Europe, SUEZ will fully utilize its technological expertise to support the country in meeting its objective of reducing plastic waste, thus contributing to the preservation of the oceans,” said Steve Clark, CEO of SUEZ Asia.

Plastic recycling is a key market for SUEZ. Each year, the Group processes nearly 400,000 tons of plastic waste in nine specialist facilities in Europe and produces 150,000 tons of circular polymers. SUEZ is also among the founding members of the Alliance to End Plastic Waste, an international initiative launched in January 2019 to end plastic waste in the environment, especially in the ocean.

This new plant is part of the Group's development strategy in Southeast Asia, where it has been supporting regional countries in improving their drinking water, sanitation and waste management services in response to a rapidly growing population. Over the past two years, SUEZ has won the contracts to build an industrial waste-to-energy plant in Thailand, extend the Medan drinking water production plant in Indonesia and build a wastewater treatment plant and a sewerage network in Vietnam’s southern province of Hau Giang.
